This week: USDA's FIELDS fertilizer-capacity program is open with an August 17 deadline, Minnesota has a hard August 11 cutoff on electric equipment grants, Missouri and Pennsylvania each have new opportunities closing in late August, and the evergreen USDA conservation and loan programs remain available. One theme worth watching: states are increasingly funding nutrient efficiency, soil health and equipment modernization — smaller than federal awards, but often more usable by an individual farm.

★ Featured Spotlight

Farmers for Soil Health  ·  $35/acre for cover-crop adoption, generally up to 2,000 acres. Enrollment pathways vary by state. One of the cleaner direct-to-farmer incentive programs available right now for corn and soybean producers considering cover crops.

Federal Policy Watch

FIELDS — Fertilizer Capacity Program Open

USDA opened the FIELDS fertilizer-capacity program with applications due August 17, 2026. Best fit is manufacturers, cooperatives and supply-chain partners, not individual farm operations.

Pennsylvania — New Ag Funding Approved

Pennsylvania approved fresh agricultural conservation and innovation funding, including $13 million in REAP tax credits. The Sustainable Agriculture Program August 28 deadline is the most actionable near-term item.

Durable USDA Programs — State Ranking Dates Control Access

Several USDA loan and conservation programs remain open, but state ranking dates and applicant-type rules still control actual access. Open does not mean available right now in every state.

What to Do This Week
1.Minnesota readers should price eligible electric farm equipment and submit before the August 11 deadline. This one does not extend.
2.Fertilizer manufacturers, cooperatives and supply-chain partners should review FIELDS before August 17.
3.Missouri local-food and farmers-market projects should test eligibility for the August 26 Food Insecure Cost-Share round.
4.Pennsylvania producers and partners should sort Sustainable Agriculture Program applications before August 28.
5.Ask vendors to separate quotes into structure, equipment, electrical, energy, conservation, processing and site-work components — programs rarely treat those costs the same way.
Farmer Trivia — Answer

Farmer Trivia — Answer: True

USDA ERS reports that U.S. farm output in 2023 was about 210% higher than in 1948 — roughly triple — while total input use rose only modestly. Labor input fell 76% and land input fell 28%. Better genetics, machinery, management, data and production systems allowed agriculture to produce dramatically more from a relatively stable input base. That is an extraordinary productivity story agriculture probably does not tell often enough.

Watch List
Nebraska ONE RED Ag Registry & GrantsProducer-facing details still to be published; watch DWEE
Pennsylvania fruit-grower disaster assistanceNew $10M fund created; application mechanics still developing
Wisconsin NOPP2026 awards made; watch for next farmer-led nitrogen research round
REAP grantsGuaranteed loans available; do not treat the grant side as open until USDA issues a new funding notice

Programs change quickly. Confirm eligibility, funding availability and current deadlines with the administering agency before applying.
