🌿 Fresh Dirt Alert · Sponsored | | | Illinois Cover Crop Premium Discount Program Illinois's state cover crop incentive removes one of the most common barriers: upfront cost with no guaranteed return. The Illinois Department of Agriculture's Cover Crop Premium Discount Program gives Illinois farmers a $5/acre discount on the following year's crop insurance premium for every enrolled and verified cover crop acre. No cash upfront — the savings show up on your next insurance invoice. The program runs on a first-come, first-served basis across 50,000 acres statewide. Acres already enrolled in EQIP, CSP or other state cost-share programs are ineligible, but this stacks well with Farmers for Soil Health and PFI cover crop programs on qualifying acres.
Pre-enrollment opens December 3, 2026 at 8 a.m. CST. Applications open December 15. The window typically closes by mid-January — acres fill fast.
